BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT 6

3)
Cui, M., Fincham, F. D., & Ddurtschi, J. A. (2011). The effect of parental divorce on young adults'
romantic relationship dissolution: What makes a difference?. Personal Relationships, 18(3),
     410-426.

4) Next, in your own words, briefly summarize the topic of the scholarly article you identified.
In this article found on Ebsco Academic Search Premier, "The effect of parental divorce on young adults’ romantic relationship dissolution: What makes a difference?", there was a statement made that said parental divorce does not have an effect on young adults' romantic relationships and that differential outcomes depend on how young the teens were while the divorce was taking place. After their findings these researcher's have found that the young adult's romantic relationship dissolution was linked with their parents divorce.

5) What method of research did the scholars use to study their topic (all of this should be in the introduction section).
To find information on this topic the researcher's conducted a survey on 571 young adults and with their collected data then used structural equation modelling to form graphs, tables and charts.

6) Did they report the findings in a graph or table form? Were the graphics clear, and/or helpful?
Yes in this article the reported findings were in table form, and in diagram form. The graphs were clear and helpful because it layed out their findings and there were little note descriptions under each table/diagram which explained each table and diagram.

BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT 5

1) Describe two of the examples of types of singles. Why are more people single today?
One example of a type of singles is the voluntary stable singles who have never been married and are satisfied with that decision. More people are single today because they would like to be independent  and more people are choosing to raise children and cohabitating without being officially married. Another type of singles the voluntary temporary singles. These people are open to marriage but put other things such as their career first before marriage.

2) Briefly describe the trend in cohabitation from 1969 to 2008 according to the Figure 9.5 "Cohabiting Couples in the United Sates" on page 246.

As shown in figure 9.5 cohabitation throughout couples in the united states have noticeably increased from 1960-2010. In 1960 there was only a number or .4 million people cohabitating and in 2010 the number increased to 6.4 million.

3) According to your textbook, there are four types of cohabitation. Please list and describe two of these using your own words.

Two of the four types of cohabitation are Dating Cohabitation and Premarital Cohabitation. Dating Cohabitation is when people who spend a large amount of time together eventually to take the step of moving in together. Premarital Cohabitation is the stage in time when a couple is between a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship and getting married. This step is to see if the couple could last with living together.

3) Would you consider cohabitation? Why or why not? If you would consider cohabiting, which of these meanings coincides with how you might view your own cohabiting relationship?
I would consider premarital cohabitation because I think it would be important and helpful to my relationship to see if I am able to comfortably and happily live with my partner. It will also give me a chance to know my partner on another level and learn more about him. These would help me to view my relationship in a new way.

4) After reading the section on Some Benefits and Costs of Cohabitation, and going over the Powerpoint slides, list 2 costs and 2 benefits.
2 Costs of cohabitation are that some partners experience a loss of identity or a feeling of being trapped.
They could feel trapped if their partner is criticizing and getting angry with them for leaving them to hang out with their friends instead, and another is cohabiting women tend to do more of the house work such as cooking and cleaning more than a married woman would. Contrary to costs there are many benefits. 2 benefits are that couples will have emotional security of an intimate relatioship but can also maintain their independence, and another benefit is that partners can end their relationships without legal problems and can leave an abusive easier.

5) Do you believe that cohabiting heterosexual couples should have the same rights as married couples? Why or why not? What if the couple are the same-sex and cannot marry in their state, should they receive the same benefits of married people. Why or why not?
I believe that cohabiting heterosexual couples should have the same rights as married couples because although they do not have a certification of marriage they are still living basically the same way as married couples. Also I believe that same-sex couples should receive the same benefits. There is no reason why same-sex couples should be discriminated against, because their marriage has no affect on anyone else's lives except for maybe their own families.

BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT 4

1. According to the slides how do we define power, prestige, and privileges and give an example of each.
Social Class refers to an ordering of individuals according to their prestige, power and privilege. According to our power point slides we define power as the ability to force another person to do something even against their will. We define prestige as respect and status in society and we also define privilege as the special advantage or benefit enjoyed by individuals, but not at all. An example of power is the President because he has power of what goes on throughout the country, an example of prestige could be an intelligent, well-known and well-liked woman or man such as the mayor of a town, and an example of privilege could be someone who has a well-paying job and is successful and makes enough money that they have the privilege to own lavish things and be well-off in the economy.

2. Also, what three variables do Sociologists use to define social class. How would you define your social class and why?

Three variable Sociologists use to define social class are income, occupation and education. I would define my personal social class as working poor because I am a college student and my source of income is through my part time babysitting jobs. My family could be considered as part of the middle class because we are well off enough based on the income my father and mother make but would not be able to go out and spend money on unnecessary items but to spend money wisely.

3. Your importance in U.S. society is often linked to race/ethnicity, education, age, income, and gender. Think about how your race/ethnicity or gender or age has blocked your from an opportunity or given you an advantage. Please identify your age, education, gender of race/ethnicity and then tell me your story of an opportunity or disadvantage you have experienced in your life.

I am a 19 year old white female and I am a sophomore at Montclair State University. I got my first babysitting job when I was 17 years old and I am still working for that family now. I think my age was definitely an advantage in getting this job because the parents are young themselves and I feel they would rather have a younger outgoing girl babysit their two young daughters, rather than an older nanny because then I could build a relationship with a girls and in some aspects act as a role model for them.

BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT 3

My race is white Caucasian, but my ethnicity is Italian. I am 100% Italian because both my father and mothers side are full Italian. I was born in Livingston, New Jersey and both of my parents were also born in New Jersey. My grandparents were all also born in New Jersey but my great grandparents were born Italy around Naples. On the census from for question 8 I would check off, “No, not of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin” and for question 9 I would check off, “White”. I do believe my race is important for certain aspects of life but I also believe it is more important for everyone to be treated equal and race shouldn’t matter. My ethnicity, although I don’t think about it much, but when I do it is important to me because it shows where my ancestors came from and it is interesting to learn more about the Italian culture and really see the background I came from.
The Doll video saddened me as I watched because I could not believe that 15 out of the 21 children chose the white doll. What shocked me the most was how the little African American boy and girl both said that the white doll was the doll that "looked nice" and the little girl also said that the black doll "looked bad" because it was black, she said. It also shocked me that the African girls that were interviewed knew basically nothing about their culture besides that they were just from Africa, but they didn't know specifically where. This video and the choices of dolls the children made shows how peoples ideas and opinions about black people are influencing young black children and what they think about themselves and people of their color.

BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT 2

1. According to the structural functionalism perspective, what was the definition of the "instrumental leader" and what was the definition of an "expressive leader." What family roles were connected to each of these leader definitions?
Instrumental leader is the father or husband. It is also someone who provides food and shelter for the family, and is hardworking. An expressive leader is the mother of the household. The expressive leader is usually the homemaker and provides emotional support and nurturing qualities. These qualities bring the family unit together and supports the father or husband.

2. What is the main criticism of the functionalist perspective?
The main criticism of the functionalist perspective is that it is so conservative in its emphasis on order and stability, that it ignored social change all together. Functionalism shows not how families interact from day to day but looks at the bigger picture on a macro level.

3. In contrast to functionalist theorists, in your own words, what is the main theme of conflict theory?
The main theme of conflict theory is how it shows how people and families disagree and compete for resources and power. Conflict theorists see changes in the power of traditional roles in the family, such as switching from the husband having the most power to the wife having the most power, desirable. They also promote values throughout families that are less oppressive.

4. According to conflict theorists, where do family problems come from?
Conflict theorists view family problems coming from big issues such as widespread societal problems, rather than individual problems.

5. Gender/Feminist theory is based on what main idea? Describe one way that feminist theory has led to more diverse understanding of families.
Feminist Theory is based on the idea of how men and women should behave that of which can shape relations between the sexes in things such as politics, the economy, religion, education and family roles. One way that feminist theory has led to more diverse understandings of families by accepting love between all genders of people and accepting and having more interracial and interethnic couples/families.

6. According to the Ecological Perspective, what is the microsystem versus the macrosystem? Use your own words.
The microsystem is the influences on a child's daily life based upon their families/parents connected behaviors and relationship. The macrosystem is based upon the bigger society and cultures instead of just based on the individual family.

7. Social exchange theorists is based on ideas from economics. What is the main argument of social exchange perspective? Give two examples of "resources" people bring to a relationship?
The main argument of the social exchange perspective is for people to stay involved in their relationships and interactions with others in order to gain rewards and minimize their costs. Two examples of "resources" that people bring to a relationship are money which one partner may use the other partner for and social status.

Assignment 1 Questions: Please cut and paste into your blog Assignment 1 and answer each question fully.

A) Please tell us about your self. For example, what is the funniest thing that ever happened to you or what about your makes you interesting? Please tell us are you an FCST major or not. If you are not a major, tell us about your own major and why you chose it. What are your current career plans? Or tell us if you plan to marry rich or travel the world!
My name is Marisa Dente. I am a sophomore at MSU and I have loved my experience here so far! I live on campus but I am from a nearby town, West Caldwell. What's interesting about me is the fact that I am an unbelievably caring person. I always put others before myself and I am always there for my friends and family when they need someone. I also love children and love working with and being with kids. I am also a very hard worker and love to get good grades and do well in school. I have not declared my major yet but I am applying to the Family and Child Studies program because that is what I would like major in. I hope after college to become an elementary school teacher and preferably teach second grade. I also intend to get married and have a happy, healthy family.

B) Also, tell us about your family - for example - are your parents married or not, do you live with them, do you have siblings, pets etc? What is the an activity you like to share with your family? etc.
I have an amazing family. I have both a mom and a dad who are still married after many years. They are very happy together and they are still in love. I still live with them, except for during the school year when I am living on campus. I also have an older brother, Joseph. He is 24 years old and is a hedge-fund analyst for Rothstein Kass. We get along great and are almost like best friends. I also have a dog, a jack russell terrier named Rocky who I have had since third grade. He is a great pet and I love him very much. One of the things my family and I love and always do together is watching football on sundays together. Every sunday my mom and I make pasta for dinner and we all sit in the basement and watch football all day and night. It is a great time and we really bond. We also love to go shopping together.

C) Please also write about TWO topics on the syllabus that interest you and write a few sentences about WHY they interest you.
One topic on the syllabus that interests me is how we are going to talk about the change in technology affecting relationships. I find this interesting because with all of the social networks that are involved in today's society, relationships can be very influenced by these. Also, through technology such as facebook people date online without ever meeting. This would be very interesting to research. Another topic I think would be interesting is Love and Sexuality. This is interesting to me because I love Love. I love talking about marriage and learning about peoples sexualities and why they are the way they are.

D) Next tell me what you think about wikis - or what you learned from the video.
Wiki's seem like an easy and efficient way for the entire class to communicate. I believe this will be better than communicating through email.
